A Man of Gold

2021/05/17
Buy whatever little gold you can, he urged me...

It was the spring after I began my first job, when the festival of gold, Akshaya Tritiya, came along like it does. I remember my babuji (father) calling me up a few days before the big day - observed to be an auspicious one, and a harbinger of prosperity. Buy whatever little gold you can, he’d urge me. It was more about the act of possession on the day apparently, than about how much you bought.

While I’ve always found it funny how I’m obliged to babuji’s requests - they’re most often duly carried out, maybe because weirdly, they just came laden with way more gravitas as compared to ma’s - this wasn’t one of those times. The lightness of my youth got the better of me, perhaps.

Crossing paths with the yellow metal

In fact, it wasn’t until last year, after my fair share of working the grind, that I properly crossed paths with the yellow metal again, by way of working on an exclusive vintage-inspired collection for my label, discovering ways of wearing it every day in the way I do the rest of my jewellery, true to my personal philosophy. Old motifs especially, excited me to no end, and I finally understood why ma would always say, buy it in gold. I came to realize it really was great for everyday wear if one could afford it - and by everyday, you know I mean at least thrice a week if not every day.

Golden advice taken this Akshay Tritya

Cut to Akshaya Tritiya today, and no surprises here - I haven’t heard from babuji yet (the good man gave up the good fight with me a while ago). But now that I’m fortunate enough to call jewellery my bread and butter, I’ve decided I must finally heed his *golden* advice. The plan is to call him and surprise him with the news of finally buying myself some gold. And every time I wear it, I know I’ll be thinking of him (besides crossing my fingers that his discerning self approves of the piece, of course).
